For the last couple days we have been practicing making change. The strategy they learned and are practicing in class is "counting up" from the COST of the item to the amount PAID.
Your child may benefit from the use of a piece of paper or a slate to do this work. We've been writing a picture like this...

Of course some children may count up a different way, but their answer should be the same amount of change.
