We have been learning about winter holidays around the world through reading and writing. We have tied it to our study of maps and geography.
I am giving the children a book called Horrible Harry and the Holidaze. I think they will enjoy it and make connections to what we've done in class.
We have also focused on identifying the main idea in texts and learning to write summary statements or topic sentences. To expand this we are recognizing important details in texts in order to write summary paragraphs.
I have created a journal to accompany the book, Horrible Harry and the Holidaze. Students should write a summary of each chapter as a reading response. They may also try to write about the things they wondered and were thinking about as they read each chapter. You may read with and to your child. Discussing each chapter is a great way to solidify their understanding and prepare them to write a response.
Feel free to let me know if you are interested in having your child participate in this winter break reading and writing activity.
Never forget, you are your child's 1st and most important teacher.
