Our school receives half of the proceeds from these sales!.
The district partners with Scholars Dollars to sell cards that can be used for discounted meals at a variety of local restaurants. There are two cards representing both north and south businesses. Scholar Dollars Fundraiser will run through next week. Are you still keeping track of the minutes you read for the Race to Read program?
Every time you read 15 minutes, you can color in one numbered area on a color sheet. Each sheet represents 4 HOURS of reading! Students receive prizes for each sheet turned completed. If students read 16 hours or more, they win tickets to Bandimere Speedway's Night of Fire & Thunder! Stellar is trying to decide if there is an interest in having a summer reading program. To help us identify a need we have created a short parent survey.
Students will have a bright yellow paper that can be sent back to school on Monday. You may also complete the survey online with this link Survey Today Stellar participated in Volunteers from Century Link taught students about Citizenship, Government, and Economics. Our class had the pleasure of learning from manager, Travis Bowie. Ask your child to tell you about their experience with Junior Achievement. We will reread our books for homework tonight and study our new spelling words. We are following a strategic process in reading to foster a deeper understanding of text through sustained interaction. Students dig deeper with multiple reads while thinking, questioning and discussing the text over and over again. This process is called Close Reading. You can read more about this process in the March 13 post below called Close Reading with Baggie Books.
After practicing with texts that were written on paper, we are moving into real books. Of course we cannot color and highlight the text in a book. So we are using a graphic organizer to capture and record this process as we interact with a text. I've attached a copy for your reference. Nonfiction organizer for Close Reading. Students use this document to record vocabulary for discussion and clarification as well as their thinking. We call this our "Jot Thoughts." We code these thoughts by type: P What we picture in our mind ? What we wonder or question I What we find interesting heart What we feel, our emotions TT Text to text connection TS Text to self connection TW Text to world connection Nonfiction texts are packed with details to support the main idea or topic of the book. In order to narrow the focus and tune into the many details, we often break the text into smaller parts to read and digest. We use Post-its to identify a stopping point and record that page number on our Reading Logs. You can help support this process by having them read the assigned section multiple times and encouraging them to discuss it with you. Help them clarify their understanding by having a conversation about interesting vocabulary, difficult words, or confusing parts. You can also ask them to identify the main idea of each section as well as important details. This helps us organize ALL the facts contained in a text into related groups (subtopics) of information that can be identified as the important details that support the main idea. This afternoon we took the opportunity to celebrate the success of our Donor's Choose Project. Thanks to the support of students, parents, friends, and family the project received full funding and the materials have been ordered.
A chorus of cheers and high-fives followed this news. My father ordered special chick and bunny cookies to celebrate spring. So I decided it was the perfect time to enjoy them and announce the good news. We talked with my dad via Skype to share our excitement and gratitude for the cookies. It was a great way to end the week and embark on a 3-day weekend! Two more days until Picture Day! Look over your Picture Day information and make sure you fill out your order form. Don't forget to pick out your outfit!

Our project has been re-posted to Donor's Choose and thanks to strong support we are quickly getting closer to funding this project in full.
Through April 4, 2014 donors can enter the promo code INSPIRE during checkout to have their contribution matched (up to $100). see video below FYI- If you would like to have the discretion to give your entire donation to our project, you must change the 15% default "optional" donation to Donor's Choose to 0%. Also, using a mobile device seems to omit this ability to opt out. In that case, you may need to use a computer to access their full site. We are working hard for Celebrate Our Stars night which will be on Wednesday, May 7. Technology integration is a big part of our project. We are getting excited to share this with you! |
