The children wrote letters to Santa and made a wish list. I told them I would send Santa's address so you could mail them to his workshop at the North Pole. So here it is...

I can't say how much your help and support meant today. Whether you provided supplies for the class celebration, served food, or cleaned up I couldn't have done it all alone. Thank you so much!
The children enjoyed plenty of food and drinks while they decorated cookies and listened to Christmas oldies. I love your kids! I'm worn out and in need of a break, but they are truly sweet and pure of heart. It has been a while since I felt that a class still possessed their childhood innocence and sense of wonder. Children are losing that earlier and earlier. Childhood is precious and brief. It's great to see and a testament to your parenting and family values. I wish you all a very joyous Christmas, a peaceful break, and a happy & healthy 2014. See you next year! I am offering my students an opportunity to practice reading and writing for fun over the winter break. This is NOT required. It is a CHOICE. Participation is optional and will be recognized and rewarded.
We have been learning about winter holidays around the world through reading and writing. We have tied it to our study of maps and geography. I am giving the children a book called Horrible Harry and the Holidaze. I think they will enjoy it and make connections to what we've done in class. We have also focused on identifying the main idea in texts and learning to write summary statements or topic sentences. To expand this we are recognizing important details in texts in order to write summary paragraphs. I have created a journal to accompany the book, Horrible Harry and the Holidaze. Students should write a summary of each chapter as a reading response. They may also try to write about the things they wondered and were thinking about as they read each chapter. You may read with and to your child. Discussing each chapter is a great way to solidify their understanding and prepare them to write a response. Feel free to let me know if you are interested in having your child participate in this winter break reading and writing activity. Never forget, you are your child's 1st and most important teacher. We will have our class Holiday Party and Book Exchange on Thursday, December 19th.
Book Exchange Children who would like to participate in the Book Exchange may bring a new book wrapped and labeled: To: My 2nd Grade Friend From: (their name) We will exchange books on Thursday before lunch. Children may bring in books anytime from now to Thursday morning. Holiday Party Our party will begin at 1:45. We will be decorating cookies. You may sign up to bring/send something using the link below. PTO is in need of volunteers for the Holiday Shop.

I'd like to direct you to the Second Grade Parent Handbook that is available on the Stellar website. It can be found under Classrooms on the 2nd grade page.
Second Grade Parent Handbook 2013-2014 We have a daily snack time in the middle of our morning. Lunch is at 12:05. Children may bring their own healthy snack. They've been doing an outstanding job at this all year! Their snack needs to be easy to eat with minimal in-class preparation. Many children like to share a snack with the class to celebrate their birthday. In light of the district wellness policy, we are encouraging these children to bring a healthy snack to share during snack time. We often have several birthdays each month. In December, we have 6 plus a holiday party! Classroom community is central to having a positive learning environment. Maintaining a good balance requires a lot of work and behavior management. Everyone is more successful and we have more time for learning when our classroom is a safe & happy place, where we all care for & about each other, and we are united in our purpose, learning. It doesn't take much to jeopardize this delicate balance. When a student hands out invitations to some students and not others, it shakes the very foundation of our class community. Many children recognized that they already have contact with the friends they want to invite outside of school by phone, play dates, sleep overs, etc. As a class we explored solutions to this and they came up with some great alternatives:
We are beginning to add 2-digit numbers. In school we approach this a bit differently than most of us remember. When I was in school (like many of you) I learned to write the equations vertically and begin adding in the one's place, carrying the one anytime the answer was bigger than 9. Basically this method is a great written strategy or algorithm. If you've ever tried to "carry the one" in your head, it can be challenging, especially as the numbers get bigger. There are just so many parts and pieces to keep straight. Most adults have adopted other strategies for computing big numbers mentally. Sometimes I add the tens first, then the ones and finish by adding the tens and ones together. Other times I adjust one of the numbers to make it easier to do mentally and make a change at the end to compensate for that adjustment. And finally, there are times when I simply start with the bigger number and skip count up, first by 10s and then by 1s. What's more interesting is that children who have not been introduced to any particular method naturally discover these strategies on their own. In the long run these methods promote the understanding of number and the mental capacity to compute large numbers in our heads. We are also using estimation to consider the reasonability of our answer. Estimation is a great way to check our work to see if it is close. Below is a video modeling and explaining these strategies. Monday is Assessment Day.
Children are scheduled for an hour and a half appointment. Reminders were sent home earlier this week. There are 4 sessions: 7:45-9:15 9:30-11:00 12:00-1:30 1:45-3:15 The schedule is available through the following link. Have a wonderful weekend! |
