Give them the positive pep talk. Let them know you believe in them and encourage them to do their very best. It means so much to know you care.
I look forward to seeing them bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and ready to rock this math assessment!

What an amazing night it was! Thank you to all who weathered the storms to join us. The building was alive with performances, activities, drawings, and colorful student work. The atmosphere was electric and fun.
I can't wait to talk with my Stellar colleagues to hear how things went! Although I didn't have an opportunity to get out and about, the positive energy and vibe was evident. I am very excited to hear there was a huge interest in our Summer Reading. Information and sign-y ups were available. The library will be open twice a week in June for limited hours. Students may read, check out books, participate in Reading Counts, and join a Book Club! I am facilitating one of the Book Clubs with Ms. Fellwock. We will read The Trumpet of the Swan. Students will engage in discussions about the book through a micro-blogging site between meetings. BONUS- Only my students will be able to use the iTouch for Reading apps. Do you know what this funny looking black and white box is called? It's a QR Code.
Some of you may have a QR Code Reader on your smartphone or mobile device. If so, you can scan it to hear a haiku I wrote with the class as a model during a lesson. Otherwise, you may want to download one before tomorrow night! There are many FREE QR Code Reader apps available. The QR Codes we made will be on display throughout the building. By scanning these QR Codes, people will be able to listen to student recorded poetry. Each student conducted research on an animal for a report. We used the knowledge gained through this research to write a haiku poem. Without naming the animal, we tell about them in a poem. Our guests will need to listen carefully to the clues in the poem to try and figure out what animal it could be. After guessing they can lift a flap that reveals the answer with a photo of the creature. Our animal haikus are displayed on posters throughout the building grouped by ecosystem. There are many exciting things going on at Celebrate Our Stars.
So I hope to see everyone there as we celebrate amazing student work! Tomorrow morning our class will be completing the end of year MAPs assessment for Reading.
Remember...
I have seen a marked improvement in reading performance based on the assessments we've already done: Assessment Day- PALs reading SRI- Scholastic Reading Inventory End of Year MAPs Language- Grammar & Usage I believe in every single one of my students and want them to do their very best. To do this, I hope they eat a good breakfast and are well rested for this assessment. Tomorrow is Assessment Day!
Make sure you get a good night sleep and eat a healthy breakfast. Reminders were sent home today and you can use this link to check the schedule. Sign Up Genius Today Stellar participated in Volunteers from Century Link taught students about Citizenship, Government, and Economics. Our class had the pleasure of learning from manager, Travis Bowie. Ask your child to tell you about their experience with Junior Achievement. We will reread our books for homework tonight and study our new spelling words. This afternoon we took the opportunity to celebrate the success of our Donor's Choose Project. Thanks to the support of students, parents, friends, and family the project received full funding and the materials have been ordered.
A chorus of cheers and high-fives followed this news. My father ordered special chick and bunny cookies to celebrate spring. So I decided it was the perfect time to enjoy them and announce the good news. We talked with my dad via Skype to share our excitement and gratitude for the cookies. It was a great way to end the week and embark on a 3-day weekend! Our project has been re-posted to Donor's Choose and thanks to strong support we are quickly getting closer to funding this project in full.
Through April 4, 2014 donors can enter the promo code INSPIRE during checkout to have their contribution matched (up to $100). see video below FYI- If you would like to have the discretion to give your entire donation to our project, you must change the 15% default "optional" donation to Donor's Choose to 0%. Also, using a mobile device seems to omit this ability to opt out. In that case, you may need to use a computer to access their full site. We are working hard for Celebrate Our Stars night which will be on Wednesday, May 7. Technology integration is a big part of our project. We are getting excited to share this with you! Yesterday we learned about Limericks, a short, funny and often nonsense poem with 5 lines that follow a strict rhyming pattern (AABBA). A famous limerick is Hickory Dickory Dock.
A Hickory Dickory Dock A The mouse ran up the clock. B The clock struck one. B The mouse ran down. A Hickory Dickory Dock! Tonight they will plan and write a limerick as part of their Baggie Book assignment. I welcome you to participate. Writing a limerick is fun and offers a great opportunity to exploring ideas and rhymes together. Guidelines:
Steps to plan a limerick:
The children helped plan and write this one in class today. Plan: Interesting character: deadly snake Fun-sounding place: El Paso Rhyme with place: lasso Problem: he has no hands Result: he is lonely Limerick: There was a deadly snake from El Paso, who tried to catch friends with a lasso. But without any hands, He fell in the sand! That poor lonely snake from El Paso! Thanks to 2 parents, my cousin, my aunt and me, we had 5 new donations for our project on Donor's Choose today!
The kids were so excited! They said, "That earned us a $75 gift card! We need 20 more to get a $1,000 gift card." A great real world math problem! If you can help, HURRY the project expires tomorrow! Power UP With Instructional Technology for Intervention |
