Throughout the year, I will send home catalogs from Scholastic Book Clubs. You may place an order at any time online using our class code HTK43.

I will set due dates each month. If you have placed an order online, it will be processed at that time and shipped to school. It is most convenient to place the order directly online; however, you may also order the old fashion way :) by completing the order form on the catalog and sending a check (payable to Stellar Elementary).

I will make suggestions for books online. Many of the books are leveled. We use DRA & lexile levels. Your child will become aware of these levels, but I can help if they're not sure.
Remember that levels are only important if they are going to use the book for independent reading practice. Also, levels are NOT fixed. Students function withing a range of levels depending on the type of text and their familiarity with the content/topic. So they could be reading between DRA 12-16 or 135-320 lexile.
Children need to experience reading in different ways outside of school.
READ to / READ with / READ Independently
READ to is when an adult or fluent reader reads to them and they listen. It is a great time to read for enjoyment/interest and to talk about what you're reading (comprehension).
READ with is when an adult reads with them helping them use strategies to figure out words, checking understanding, and rereading for fluency.
READ independently is when they read all by themselves, using strategies to self-correct and monitor their understanding. An adult can listen and talk with them about the book to check their understanding, but the bulk of the reading work is done by the student.
